Hiking Speed Question

I'm a brand new member and I'm trying to gauge the difficulty of the planned hikes.  I see that there are descriptive terms such as "strenuous" and there are also mileages listed - but no times.  How does that work?  If members car pool, do the faster ones just sit and wait for the others to arrive?  How do I pick the right hike to avoid people waiting a long time (others waiting on me or me waiting on others)?  What's the average hiking rate?

Re: Hiking Speed Question
I'd say that speed is only an issue for the regular Saturday hikes and the Midweek Milers' hikes. These groups hike at 3+ mph as a moving average and might get spread out temporarily. However they wait at turns to regroup (also "people" and lunch breaks). If there is a long stretch of trail without turns at the end of the hike the faster ones may wait at the end for awhile - usually not more than 5 - 15 minutes. Hikers pretty much stay together during the other hikes and walk at 2 to 3 mph. In the above, speed refers to relatively level terrain; hills change everything. Bill Hardam Hiking Chair
