Swift Water Rescue

 Sheella Mierson wrote

Please note that on Saturday August 2 we will have a river rescue clinic at the wing dam on the Delaware River (Lambertville, NJ). This coincides with one of the Lehigh releases--it was the best date we could work out between the schedules of the instructors and out-of-town WTC trips. We will have three (3!) ACA-certified swift water rescue instructors from the National Canoe Safety Patrol. They are donating their time for this, so it'll be good to have a really good turnout. (If we were to pay for it, it would cost us each $400.) You want everyone who paddles with you to attend this clinic! I'll get out more information soon, but I wanted people to be able to put it on their calendars now.

Sheella, can you tell us what we have to do to get signed up for this training?

Re: Swift Water Rescue

Sure. I'm handling the sign-ups just like for a paddling trip.

Do I understand correctly that this is free training for participants?

River Rescue Training, Saturday, August 2, 2008

The Wilmington Trail Club is offering Swift Water Rescue training on Saturday, August 2, on the wing dam of the Delaware River (Lambertville, NJ). You want everyone who paddles with you to take this course! You’ll learn how to avoid getting into trouble on the river, and what to do when you do get into trouble—whether you or the people with you. The time to learn and practice these skills is before we need them, and just like good paddling skills they take regular practice. We have Dick Rhoads to thank for arranging this; Dick paddled with the WTC when he lived in Delaware, and he now lives in Lackawaxen, PA. He’ll be bringing two other instructors; all three are ACA-certified rescue instructors and are part of the National Canoe Safety Patrol (NCSP) on the upper Delaware River (and one is Training Director of the NCSP and a certified rescue instructor trainer). All three are donating their time for this; let’s be sure to have a good turnout. Sign up by Friday, July 18; CreativeLearning @ mindspring.com, (302) 738-4173.

Re: Swift Water Rescue

I took this class the year I started and it was excellent. I am planning on going and I highly recommend this to everyone that has never attended. It is also really cool to get something to eat in New Hope after the class.

P.S. Most of the people signed up are new paddlers, which is great. This training is also for people who have had it before, to refresh and sharpen our skills--join us!
