Pool Sessions at Western YMCA
Modified By Tom Halladay on 11/9/2008 11:37:11 AM)

Original post was modified to include the proper start date. Thanks Shannon!

Announcement!
I am happy to announce a new relationship between the Western Family YMCA and the WTC Paddlers. Beginning Sunday November 9, 2008 we will start weekly Pool Sessions. They will run Sundays through April 2009.  This will provide us with a warm area to practice our rolling, teach new people how to roll, and provide a great social venue for paddlers during the winter months.

Times
Our sessions will start at 8 am. Since this particular YMCA doesn't open until 10am on Sundays, this gives us an hour and a half of uninterrupted pool access.  You will only be able to get into the  building between 7:45  and 8:30. After that, the doors will be locked. We have to have our boats out of the water at 9:40 and out of the building by 10. Also, since the Y is not open during the sessions, payment must be made in CASH to the WTC representative supervising the session that day.

Location
The Western Family Y is located at 2600 Kirkwood Highway, Newark, DE 19711.  Access to the pool sessions will be through an outside entrance located on the right side of the building. There will be plenty of directional signs in the parking lot.

More Information
Soon there will be a page in the paddling section of this website devoted to pool session schedules. The YMCA is requiring us to insure the sessions through ACA. Please see the fee information for sessions and ACA membership below.  Since this is a new venue, it may be a little rocky in the beginning, but we will get any kinks worked out quickly.

Pool Session Fees
Just like last year, there will be fees for the pool sessions this year.  They are based on our insurance coverage as well as facility fees. The pool session fees are strictly to cover costs, and the WTC does not profit from them.   These fees are per pool session, and there are 25 scheduled sessions at the YMCA this winter.

Update to anyone who will be attending rolling sessions at the Y.

PLEASE CLEAN OUT YOUR BOATS BEFORE YOU BRING THEM TO THE YMCA,  DIRTY BOATS WILL BE TURNED AWAY!!!

Since I am not a cash register, I would ask that everyone please bring the exact amount of money needed to pay their fees. Please break it down into fees to the Y and fees to ACA.  If you owe the Y $15 and ACA $5, DON'T bring me a 20 dollar bill!   Bring me $15 and $5 PLEASE!  Cash only, NO exceptions!

If you are joining ACA , it is  very easy to do online in advance of the rolling sessions. When you join online, you will get a receipt or confirmation number. Please bring  a copy of that to your first rolling session. Keep in mind, that you do NOT have to join ACA, you can pay the $5 insurance fee each time you come to a session. However, ACA membership is encouraged.

Keep in mind, that waivers will have to be signed  even if you are a current ACA member.  If you are already an ACA member, please remember to bring your card or number with you. These are ACA rules, not mine. Things are a little different at this location because the YMCA required us to insure the sessions.

Re: Pool Sessions at Western YMCA

You only need all that stuff if you actually plan to roll.  You should think about bringing a spray skirt too.  Organ donor card is optional.

Bob,

As you know i have a large collection of boats.

So, as things develop and new people show up looking for instruction, i have boats i'd be willing to rent out.

Re: Pool Sessions at Western YMCA

Just an update, i removed the calendar from the pool session page, and I put the pool sessions on the touring and whitewater calendars.  Thinking on it, we don't want too many calendars, people should just get used to checking the same calendar regularly.

Re: Pool Sessions at Western YMCA

We had our first YMCA rolling sessions Sunday November 9. We had 11 people show up. Great turnout. After the session 5 of us went to Michael's Restaurant  for a buffet breakfast. $10.99 all you can eat. They had tons of food. Was well worth it. We may have found a new place to eat.

The next session at the YMCA is this Sunday November 16, 2008. Click here for information on time and pricing.

Hope to see you there!

Re: Pool Sessions at Western YMCA

Bob,

Do spectators (non- rollers) have to pay anything?

Spectators wouldn't have to pay a fee to they Y as far as I am concerned. However, I will have to talk to ACA about the insurance issue since we have assumed all liabilily for what occurs during the sessions. I will let you know.

Re: Pool Sessions at Western YMCA

I asked ACA, the response from Helen Oyen, Isurance Coordinator follows:

Bob,

As long as they are not participating in the event, they do not have to sign the waiver and pay the event fees.  But remember that they are not going to be covered by the insurance.

Re: Pool Sessions at Western YMCA

Hey, I'm not sure if you have thought of this before, but would anyone be able to bring their video camera for a pool session?  Maybe if I can see what I'm doing wrong, I can fix it.  Of course, I'm sure my roll will magically reappear tomorrow, but if not, I'd like to have a backup plan.  :)

Re: Pool Sessions at Western YMCA

Shannon,

I'll have my waterproof camera which takes video.  And, I'm sure Tom will have his.
