ASCI to Host 2010 Open Canoe Slalom Nationals & North American Championships - August 6-8, 2010
Adventure Sports Center International to host National Championship whitewater competition for fourth year in a row; the top event in Open Canoeing will sport talent from across the country and Canada

ASCI and the American Canoe Association will be hosting 2010 Open Canoe Slalom Nationals and North American Championships Aug. 6-8.

The National Championships brings competitors from across the country, and since it doubles as the North American Championships it will also amount to a duel between the U.S. and Canada. The all-time record holder in Open Canoe racing, John “Kaz” Kazimierczyk of New Hampshire, will be on hand to defend his 2009 title as Open Canoe Champion, as well as upstart youngsters such as Hailey Thompson (Junior National Champion) of Wisconsin.

Open Canoe racing involves boats that look like traditional canoes (as opposed to the Olympic cousins, which are decked and look like kayaks), and which race on Class II-III(IV) whitewater. The challenge is not only to maneuver the boat through the prescribed sequence of gates hung over the rapids – some of which require a competitor to paddle upstream – but competitors must also race without ‘swamping’ their boat in the rapids. This occurs when waves or hydraulics splash over the edge of the open canoe, and fill the boat up with water.

This will be the first Open Canoe race at ASCI, which has already hosted the 2007 and 2008 Slalom Canoe and Kayak National Championships (Olympic classes, with ‘decked’ canoes); 2007 Freestyle Canoe and Kayak National Championships; and the 2009 Rafting National Championships. The ASCI whitewater course can adjust to accommodate both world class, Olympic caliber competition, as well as facilitate beginner levels of racing.

Open Canoeing is a North American invention, and canoes were largely used as transport on rivers and lakes by Native Americans, and were seldom used to ‘shoot’ rapids. In the 1940’s, Europeans started racing kayaks on whitewater, and when the sport of whitewater slalom took hold in the U.S., the application of traditional canoes to the new sport of whitewater racing became a fixture.

The event will be free to the public, with food and beverages on hand and canoe and kayak demonstrations throughout the weekend. Call ASCI at 301-387-3250 or email for more information at asci@adventuresportscenter.com.
