Shenandoah May 3

I've got a buddy who is a boater and who will be in town this weekend.  I'm thinking of going down to paddle the Shenandoah with him on Saturday.  Anybody else interested?

Looks like The water might be down to about 5 feet by Saturday if it dosen't rain some more.

That might be interesting.

Re: Shenandoah May 3

I will go if Ed and a couple of other guys go. However I have never done it above 4 feet.

At 5 feet the staircase is considered class 4. If a group of 4 or 5 people want to do it. I will go.

I got a call into Bernie and I will see if Vinton wants to go. I need Ed's opinion about the 5 foot or above level

He probably knows the characteristics better then anyone I know.

Re: Shenandoah May 3

A full Class IV??? No way!!

It is a problem for rescues - that is what makes it difficult at high water.

The run might be a possibility for me not sure until tomorrow.

Sounds like its coming together.  I wanted to meet my buddy in Harper's Ferry at 10 AM, but I'm not sure where.  I'm bringing his boat with me, and will have room for 1 or 2 more people.  Anybody want to ride along with me?

I'm pretty sure it isn't a full Class IV by any stretch of the imagination, though I have to confess I've never run it at anything less than low levels.  I'm sure that there may be some bigger holes here and there, but the issue, as was pointed out, is that it is a -w i d e- river, so any swim could be long.

Sounds good. I was only going what American White Water’s Description was. Sounds like fun. I am leaving from Dover Delaware. Vinton is coming with me and we will leave from here. I go across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and then around the Beltway to Rt 70. Where do you want to meet? I am going to send some emails out to see if any one else might want to come. Take Care and see you tomorrow.

Here is the plan.

I will preface this by noting that it has been something like 9 years since I last paddled this section.

To get to Harper's Ferry, take Rt. 340 from Frederick, MD.

The takeout is on the right just after you cross the bridge over the Potomac and into Virginia--there is very limited parking there, and as I recall, actual parking is across the street and just beyond the takeout.  There may be a small fee, but who knows.  Unless one of you has more updated information, I propose to meet at a diner just outside Harper's Ferry, on the MD side of the river, at the last exit off of 340.  That way we can have coffee and get organized.  We'll then drop off a shuttle vehicle at the takeout and head up to the put-in (where, by the way, there again is a parking fee, or at least they used to charge).

This last exit in Maryland, before you get to the bridge, is Keep Tryst Road.  Turn left there, and the Cindy-Dee Restaurant should be right there.  (If you turn right instead, you will be at River and Trail Outfitters.)  Let's meet at the diner at 10 AM.

My cell phone:  207-266-3544

Ed, contact me if you are coming and you want to ride down together.

Feel free to pass this on to other paddlers who might be interested.

Bob, could you please pass this on via the Update or by emailing it to the distribution list?  Thanks.

See y'all Saturday AM!
