Purpose

The Open House is presented by the Wilmington Trail Club paddlers group and is setup to introduce interested new paddlers to the sport of kayaking. We will present an overview of our club and the training program that is offered each spring. This will be followed with a short presentation at an in-door pool of various types of kayaks and related paddling gear. Snacks will be provided.

What do I need to bring?

Nothing. Prospective students and guests will not be paddling or get in the water for this event. We are there to answer all your questions.

Purpose

 

Introduction – basic paddle sport training including equipment, gear and the training process

Complete two skill tests. Swimming, which you should already know, and the Wet Exit which we will teach you.

 

·         Swimming proficiency test – Kayaking as a sport requires you to know how to swim. You will need to demonstrate your ability to swim one length of the pool, using any stroke that you prefer

·          Wet exit  – You will be taught how to easily and safely exit a kayak should it turn upside down.  After being taught this, you will need to demonstrate being able to do it on your own comfortably and safely.  More information about this is provided below.

 

What are the facilities?

 

This session will be provided at Cab Calloway School of the Arts in Wilmington, DE.  The initial training session will be in a classroom and the rest will be at the indoor pool.  You will have access to changing rooms with lockers.

Essentials of River Kayaking

 

This course is designed to give students tools to travel down a moving river. The first day is on flat water and the second day is on moving water

River Kayaking

 

The prerequisite is the completion of Essentials of River Kayaking. In this course, the current will be faster moving water. The course will build on the tools presented in the Essentials of River Kayaking course. You will spend the both days on moving water.

Whitewater Kayaking

 

The prerequisite is the completion of River Kayaking. This course emphasizes additional skill acquisition for paddling on fast moving water and/or whitewater.

Kayak Rolling Practice – 2011-2012 Winter Pool Sessions

 

Winter pool sessions start Sunday November 20, 2011 and continue through April 29, 2012.  (There are no rolling sessions on December 25, January 1, and April 8.)

 

Location

Sessions are held at the Western Family YMCA Bubble Pool. 

The Y is located at 2600 Kirkwood Highway, Newark, DE 19711

The bubble pool is located at the back of the Y complex, near the baseball fields.

 

Time

Pool sessions are each Sunday from 7:00 AM to 9:40 AM. 

Please have all boats out of the water no later than 9:40, and be completely out of the pool area before 10:00.

 

Boats / Equipment

Please make sure your boat is clean / free of debris and airbags removed before putting it in the pool.  Helmets and PFD's must be worn when in the pool.  Some club boats and equipment will be available, if needed.

 

Membership Requirements / Fees

To support our club and reduce insurance paperwork, the Paddling Board has decided to require all attendees to be members of both ACA and WTC.  (Participants will be allowed to attend 2 sessions without having ACA and WTC memberships.  After two sessions, participants are required to belong to ACA and WTC.) 

 

Membership Tip:

  • There are 21 pool sessions offered this winter.  If you plan to attend pool sessions more than 2 times, it is best to first join WTC ($15 for an individual membership, good through March 2012), then join ACA as a Paddle-America Club member at $30 for one year ($10 discount for being a WTC member!!!).  Total Cost = $45 up front, plus $5/week for non-YMCA members.  By your 5th visit, you will be saving money! 
  • If you are just interested in trying it out, or coming a couple of times, the cost is a maximum of $15/week, for up to 2 sessions.

  • The WTC club directory will be used to verify membership.  Please check the club directory to be sure your name is listed.  If you are a member and aren’t listed, please contact me prior to attending a session.
  • ACA member number must be provided at sign-in.
  • YMCA members will need to present/scan their Y membership ID upon entering the bubble pool.
