The weather was very windy and rainy so the seven of us decided to scale back and drive to Lehigh Gap and explore loop trails from the Gap.
We hiked south on the AT to the North (scenic) trail. This gave us a great view of the Gap, Palmerton, Bowmanstown, Weisport and off in the distance Lehighton and Jim Thorpe. We also explored the Charcoal Trail but turned back when it looked like the trail was continuing downhill.(We later discovered that the Charcoal trail drops down into the Lehigh Gap Nature Preserve (LGNP)and connects with their trail network- looks the LGNP trails system is along the north face of the mountain - mostly Rail trails and Prairie Trails all the way around to near the I476 tunnel (they do show up on Google Maps)). The wind was coming from the north so we got blasted while we were hiking along the North trail. When we got back to the AT, we decided to continue south to the South (scenic) trail. The South scenic trail is a one mile rock scramble. Challenging but with great views to the south. Would have been a great place for lunch if the winds were a bit tamer. We got back to the AT (in the woods) and had a quick lunch break, then followed the AT back towards the Gap. We came across the Woodpecker Trail and guessed that it might take us to the LGNP office. (It did) The LGNP office was closed (staffed by volunteers - so hours are unpredictable) but we were able get maps of LGNP trails. We hiked the LNE (Lehigh and New England RR)trail to Bobolink trail and back on the D & L trail. The D & L trail is an old RR bed that is down near the Lehigh River. The LNE is an old RR bed that is one level up from the D & L so there's a climb from the nature center to the LNE trail. Looks like the LGNP trails are mostly in the open so we would recommend these when it is not too hot nor too cold and windy. We all had a "blast".
