This is a heads-up that we will be paddling Saturday, September 21st on the Pocomoke River and Sunday the 22nd at Jane's Island.  Both paddles require a touring kayak that tracks well and is at least 12feet long.  We will be establishing our base at Pocomoke River State Park (Shad’s landing, Acorn loop), which is 3.5miles south of Snow Hill, Md. This is a convenient campground that will require you to reserve through the online reservation system that the Maryland state park system uses.

If you are interested in joining us for the trip please post on the forum or contact us via email Kalindi (kalindi2 at gmail dot com) or Bob (bstrahor at Comcast dot net)

Pocomoke River Paddles (we will choose the paddle based on group size and expertise):

Porter’s Crossing to Snow Hill (5.5 miles)– Starts out narrow and twisty, with tall cypress forest and tea-colored water.  River gradually widens as approach Snow Hill and passes under a bridge right next to Pocomoke River Canoe Company. (at very high tides may not be able to pass under bridge)

Snow Hill to Nassawango Creek Confluence – (~1 mile Weakly Tidal) Rivers broadens to a respectable size and is very deep and cool.  At the downriver end of Snow Hill is a nice little town park with drinking water and bathrooms. More boaters along this section, and river speed is a mix of current and tide (Tidal predictions at Snow Hill are 3.5hours behind Crisfield MD)

Nassawango Creek (Bridge at Red House road) to Nassawango Creek Confluence (~3 miles)

Snow Hill to Shad Landing (Pocomoke River State Park) – (4.5 miles Tidal)

Janes Island State Park is located near Crisfield, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.  Paddling the area gives options for all areas of expertise, from the open waters of the Tangier Sound to the >30 miles of marked paddle tails that traverse a Chesapeake Bay salt marsh.  Most of these interior waterways are protected from wind and current.  Fall is when you may see some of the many migrating birds that cross the region.  Regardless of the time of year you can expect to see beautiful vistas, egrets, herons of all types, snails, crabs including the beautiful blue crab, many fish, osprey, and many other animals and birds. (Insects are very plentiful too, so don’t forget the bug spray!)
