Thursday Short & Easy Hike

Depart at 10:00 a.m. from the "Fort DuPont State Park – Colter Rd Lot", Delaware City, DE, for a 4-5 mile hike. This unusual triangle of land is surrounded by the Delaware River to the east, the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal to the south, and the old Chesapeake & Delaware Canal to the northwest.  There are many historical remnants here.

Bring water and lunch.   No fees or restrooms.  This area was recently purchased by the "Fort DuPont Redevelopment & Preservation Corporation" (  And most of the street name signs have been changed, although most mapping information remains with the original names!  During the transition, both old and new street names are included in the driving directions.

Driving Directions: From the intersection of US-13 & DE-72. Travel south on DE-72 for 1.5 miles. Continue straight onto DE-9 and proceed 2.4 miles. Cross the small C&D Branch Canal bridge, but not the huge C&D Main Canal bridge! Immediately turn left onto New Castle Avenue / Old Elm Avenue and proceed 174 ft. Turn right onto Delaware Avenue / Oak Lane and proceed 0.1 mile. Then turn left onto Kent Avenue / Colter Road and proceed 0.1 mile.  This old lot is on the right, before the buildings.
